What is Alzheimers?

Are Alzheimer's and Dementia a normal part of growing old?

Dementia is a broad term used to define the many ways a person loses their ability for normal brain function. It usually starts with short term memory loss and progresses through many stages such as an inability to perform normal everyday functions, behavior changes, and eventually they cannot care for themselves. There are many causes of dementia and NO, it is not a normal part of getting old. If it were everyone would get it, whereas many older people retain their mental capabilities well into their 80's and 90's.

Alzheimer's and dementia are brain diseases. Not all dementia is ALZ but all ALZ, the destruction of nerve cells, is dementia and is responsible for 50-75% of the cases of dementia. The second most reason is vascular dementia which is caused by the blockage of blood vessels.
